Since its first release in 1931, a little collection of bedtime stories called A Hive of Busy Bees has become something of a “sleeper” classic for the children’s books genre.

Four generations of children have enjoyed its poignant stories — they have a way of making an indelible mark on the mind of a child.

For those of us who heard these stories as children, the character lessons still stick with us.

Which is why we have now added A Hive of Busy Bees to our collection of Christian read-alouds.

The story revolves around little Don and Joyce visiting their grandparent’s farm — a unique enough context to capture a child’s interest, but simple enough to be easy to understand.

The setting takes us back to another time and place, when generational faith and relational health was still normal.

Don and Joyce experience life’s lessons throughout the summer on the farm — while listening in on grandmother’s stories before heading off to bed.

Since entering the public domain, this collection has been republished in various venues over the decades.

For this edition, we have adapted it to accommodate a biblical family discipleship approach — in which character is taught upon the grounds of the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Our children need lessons in both faith and character.

The adaptations we’ve made to this book work seamlessly with the stories it contains…so every lesson concerning character is clearly rooted in the soil of Scriptural truth.

This is one more way in Proverbs’ tradition for inculcating biblical character — while underscoring the blessings of walking in God’s ways and the consequences of ignoring them.

'And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:32)

'But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.”' (1 Peter 1:15-16)

Don and Joyce are excited to spend the summer with Grandpa and Grandma on their peaceful farm in the country. Together, they enjoy the warmth of the sun and the daily chores and activities of the farm. Yet the most memorable part of their visit is the fascinating stories told by Grandmother each day. The children learn a series of timeless virtues through stories and Scripture, each tied to a “busy bee” they’re encouraged to: Bee Grateful, Bee Prayerful, Bee Obedient, Bee Kind, and others.

Filled with memorable stories, gentle humor, and biblical truths, A Hive of Busy Bees weaves together storytelling and spiritual instruction in a way that both children and parents will enjoy. Perfect for family reading, devotionals, or character-building lessons, this classic tale inspires young hearts to live for the Lord - one busy bee at a time.
